Your attention span probably isn't shorter. Your switching habit is faster, and research shows half those switches come from you, not notifications. Train the return with ten minutes of counting breaths daily. Rule out sleep debt first. Lifelong focus trouble warrants an ADHD assessment.
You sat down to read something. Four paragraphs in, you noticed your thumb had already opened another app, and you don’t remember deciding to do that. So now you’re here, asking whether your brain got worse.
Short answer: probably not. The thing that changed is how fast you switch, and a surprising share of those switches come from you rather than from anything buzzing at you. That distinction matters, because one of those is trainable and the other one mostly isn’t.
Let me start by killing the statistic you’ve almost certainly seen.
The Eight-Second Goldfish Statistic Is Made Up
You know the one. Humans now have an attention span of eight seconds, down from twelve, which is worse than a goldfish at nine.
It’s fake. In 2017, BBC journalist Simon Maybin tried to find the study behind it and couldn’t find one. The number came from a Microsoft marketing report, which had taken it from a site called Statistic Brain, which never produced a source when asked. The goldfish half has no research behind it either. Nobody sat down and measured a goldfish.
I’m spending a paragraph on this because that stat is doing real damage. It tells people their attention is broken at a biological level, which is both untrue and weirdly demotivating. Once you believe your brain has degraded, the obvious move is to stop trying.
What Researchers Actually Measured: 47 Seconds
There is a real number, and it’s more interesting than the fake one.
Gloria Mark, an informatics professor at UC Irvine, has been tracking attention on screens since 2004. Early on her team followed people around with stopwatches, timing every activity. Later they used software logging. Across two decades, she’s watched the number fall: about two and a half minutes on a single screen in 2004, about 75 seconds by 2012, and roughly 47 seconds in recent years. The median is 40 seconds, meaning half of all measurements were shorter than that.
That’s a genuine, objectively measured decline. It’s also not measuring what most articles claim it measures.
Capacity and Habit Are Two Different Things
Forty-seven seconds is how long someone stays on one screen before switching to another. It’s a measure of behavior in a specific environment: a laptop, open tabs, a phone within arm’s reach, work that arrives in fragments.
It is not a measure of how long your attention can last.
Think about the last film you watched all the way through, or the book you read past midnight, or the conversation with a friend that ran two hours. Your attention held fine. Nobody who binges a whole season in a weekend has a nine-second attention span. The capacity is intact. What’s changed is the speed and frequency of switching in the environments where switching is one thumb-flick away and always slightly more appealing than what you’re doing.
This is good news, though it’s less flattering than the alternative. A damaged brain isn’t your fault. A habit is.
About Half of Your Interruptions Come From You

Here’s the finding I wish were on every article about this.
Dabbish, Mark, and González analyzed 889 hours of observed task-switching across 36 workers at three companies. A large share of the switching was self-interruption. No notification fired. No colleague appeared. The person simply stopped what they were doing and went somewhere else.
Their data suggested self-interruption is shaped by environment and by habit, and that it often fires as a prospective-memory event: you remember you meant to check something, and the remembering itself yanks you out. People in open-plan offices interrupted themselves at a higher rate, which is a strange and telling result. External interruption trains internal interruption.
Notice what this does to the standard advice. Turning off notifications addresses the external half. It does nothing about the half you generate. That’s why people put their phone in a drawer, feel focused for eleven minutes, and then open a new browser tab to look up something that could have waited.
There’s a related finding worth knowing. In a controlled study, Mark, Gudith, and Klocke found that people who were interrupted actually finished tasks faster, with no drop in quality. They compensated by working faster. They also reported more stress, more frustration, more time pressure, and more effort. So the cost of a fragmented day isn’t necessarily your output. It’s what the day does to you.
Three Causes Worth Ruling Out Before You Blame Your Phone
Phones are the loud answer. These three are quieter and more fixable.
Sleep debt. A meta-analysis by Lim and Dinges covering 70 studies and 147 cognitive tests found that of everything short-term sleep loss damages, the single largest effect was on lapses in simple sustained attention. Not reasoning. Not complex problem-solving. The plain ability to keep paying attention to a boring thing. If you’re sleeping six hours and wondering why you can’t focus, you have your answer before you get to screen time. This one is worth fixing first because it’s mechanical: start with sleep, then reassess.
Anxiety. Attentional control theory, laid out by Eysenck and colleagues in Emotion, describes what anxiety does to attention: it weakens the goal-directed system (the one that keeps you on the task you chose) and strengthens the stimulus-driven system (the one that snaps toward anything new). Anxious attention isn’t absent. It’s busy, scanning, and highly capturable. People often read this as a focus problem and try to fix it with productivity systems, which is a bit like fixing a smoke alarm by taking the battery out.
Heavy media multitasking. Uncapher and Wagner reviewed a decade of research in PNAS and found that people who habitually run several media streams at once tend to perform worse on sustained attention and working memory. I want to be honest about the limit here, because most articles aren’t: the authors explicitly say the direction of causation is unresolved. Heavy multitasking might erode attention, or people with more distractible attention might gravitate toward multitasking. The correlation is real. The arrow isn’t established.
Why “Just Focus Harder” Keeps Failing
Because focus isn’t a muscle you clench. Attention wanders on its own, constantly, in everyone, including people who’ve meditated for thirty years. The wandering isn’t the failure.
Someone who reads for an hour has a mind that wanders too. What they do differently is notice quickly and come back without making a thing of it. Most people lose the thread, then spend the next ninety seconds annoyed about losing the thread, which is itself another form of not reading.
So the skill to train is the return. Noticing, without commentary, and going back. That’s a trainable action with a specific rep, which is exactly what “focus harder” lacks.
The Evidence for Training the Return
This is where meditation stops being a vague wellness suggestion and becomes mechanism-matched to the actual problem.
Mrazek and colleagues at UC Santa Barbara ran a randomized trial published in Psychological Science. Undergraduates took a two-week mindfulness course. Afterward, their working memory capacity improved and their GRE reading-comprehension scores went up. The part that matters most: the improvement was mediated by reduced mind-wandering, and it was largest in the students who were most prone to distraction to begin with.
Mediated is the key word. The training didn’t improve reading by teaching reading. It improved reading by reducing how often attention drifted off mid-passage, which is the exact failure you experience when you reread a paragraph four times.
Honest scope, because it matters: this was a small sample of undergraduates over two weeks, not a decade-long study of the general population. It’s one well-designed trial, not a settled literature. But it’s the trial whose mechanism lines up with the problem, which is more than can be said for most focus advice.

A 10-Minute Practice for Rebuilding Attention

This is focused-attention meditation, the plainest form there is. It’s repetitive on purpose. The repetition is the training.
- Sit somewhere upright, chair or cushion, and put the phone in another room. Not face down. Another room.
- Close your eyes or drop your gaze a few feet in front of you.
- Find the breath somewhere specific. The air at your nostrils, or your belly rising. Pick one spot and stay with it.
- Count breaths, one to ten, then start over at one. Count on the exhale.
- When you lose count, and you will, notice that you left. Don’t rate your performance. Just start again at one.
- Do that for ten minutes.
Losing count is not a failure of the practice. Losing count and returning is the practice. If you get through ten minutes and only reached four twice, you did more reps than someone who sailed through cleanly.

The Drill That Works During Actual Work
Meditation builds the capacity. This spends it.
While you’re working, watch for the urge to switch. It has a texture you can learn: a small restlessness, a slight aversion to the sentence in front of you, and then a hand reaching for a phone that hasn’t made a sound.
When you catch it, do nothing for three seconds. Don’t fight it. Don’t lecture yourself. Just let the urge sit there unfulfilled for three seconds, then go back to the task.
You’ll lose most of these at first. You’ll notice the urge after you’ve already opened the tab. That still counts, because the noticing is the rep. Over a couple of weeks the noticing starts arriving earlier, before your hand moves.
The other half of the work is environmental, and it’s boring but effective: close the tabs you’re not using, keep the phone out of the room instead of face down, and if your day is one long stream of open-plan interruption, protect a block of it. Doomscrolling and the dopamine detox trend both circle this same territory from different angles.
When a Short Attention Span Is Something Else
Some of this isn’t a habit problem, and it’s worth knowing where the line is.
If your attention difficulties have been there since childhood, show up in every setting rather than just at a screen, and have consistently interfered with school, work, or relationships, that pattern is worth an assessment for adult ADHD. It’s common, frequently missed in adults, and treatable. Meditation can help alongside treatment, and there’s research on meditation and ADHD, but it isn’t a replacement for a diagnosis.
If your focus changed suddenly, over weeks rather than years, see a doctor. Thyroid problems, anemia, medication side effects, concussion, perimenopause, and long-term illness all show up as attention trouble first. That’s a medical question, not a discipline question.
And if the concentration problem sits alongside low mood, loss of interest, or persistent anxiety, treat the mood as the primary thing. Depression and anxiety both degrade attention directly, and focus tends to return when they’re treated.
